Megan Frazee Interview – From Turkey (by STL)

I recently had the chance to get a quick interview with Silver Stars’ Megan Frazee and catch up with how she is doing in Turkey, adjustments that had to be made and how it has been to play with some of the best players in the game.
STL: What was the hardest transition for you coming out of college and into the WNBA?
Megan: I was blessed to come to a team like San Antonio. The coaches and players made my transition to the team very smooth. The game is a lot more mental I think at the WNBA level. I learned so much my “rookie” year in the league. Once again though, I would like to thank my coaches and teammates for answering any questions that I had, and helping me out.
STL: You were the only rookie with the Silver Stars last season, what did the vets have you doing as rookie duty?
Megan: Honestly, I really did not have to do much as a rookie. I was called upon by Helen one time to carry her groceries up to her apartment, but besides that not really anything. They all took it easy on me, which was nice!
STL: You are in Turkey right now playing overseas ball, what was the biggest cultural shock or way of life that you had to get accustomed to?

Courtesty of Megan Frazee
Megan: I have enjoyed my experience in Turkey so far. There were some adjustments that I had to make when first arriving. I had to get used to the food over here, how to find my way around the city (Ankara), and try to pick up a little bit of Turkish. The people in Turkey are welcome to foreigners. All of my teammates and coaches have done a great job helping me out, and answering any questions that I might have.
STL: From college, to the WNBA, to Turkey all in one year, what is one thing that you would tell rookies coming in this season, that may have the same type of journey as you, to prepare themselves for?
Megan: My life has been full of transition over the last 6 months or so. I would tell rookies who are coming in, “Go with the flow of things”. For me, my relationship with the Lord has helped me tremendously. He has guided me and given me everything I need daily. Life is full of changes, and it will be a lot of change in a short amount of time, but it is so FUN! Enjoy life and live every day to the fullest.
STL: Speaking of Turkey, we touched on the transition from college ball to WNBA ball, what was the hardest transition to playing ball in Turkey after playing a season in the WNBA?
Megan: The Turkish Basketball League is a very competitive league. Most of the teams have 2, 3, or sometimes 4 WNBA players on each team. I have enjoyed getting to play against quality competition each time I step out on the floor. The hardest transition about playing her in Turkey, has been the refs. They are quick to call travels over here, that are really not travels, and then they let a lot of physical play go on! Sometimes I feel like I have just played a football game when coming off of the floor after the game (no not that bad really, but it is quite physical)!
STL: What are some of the tourist spots that really stand out to you overseas that you have had the pleasure of seeing?

Megan: There are so many tourist spots to be seen in Turkey. To be honest, I have not seen too many of them yet. When I first arrived in Turkey, I flew into Samsun. I was able to see the Black Sea, which was pretty neat. I have quite a few on my list of places that I would love to go. The top place on my list to visit is Cappadocia. I have heard that it is AMAZING!! It is a place that has cave homes, and is also home to a lot of Biblical history. I just played in Istanbul a few days ago, and hear that it is a hopping place. There are about 15 million people in the city!! I wouldn’t mind going there for a day or 2 and look at some of the neat things the city has to see.
STL: What has been your favorite city to play in with the WNBA?
Megan: My favorite city to play in the WNBA is probably Seattle. It is gorgeous out there ☺. Honestly though, I liked a lot of the other cities as well. I enjoy experiencing new places and seeing new things!!
STL: What has it been like for you playing with players like Vickie Johnson, Ruth Riley, and Becky Hammon, some of the best players in the game?
Megan: It has been a privilege for me to be able to play with VJ, Ruth Riley, and Becky Hammon. Playing with the best and against the best makes a person better. They all did a tremendous job taking me under their wings so to speak and showing me the ropes. They were all very encouraging to me, and I count it a blessing!
STL: Do you have any pre-game things that you do? Any lucky socks, shorts, etc?
Megan: I do not have any pre-game things that I do. Sometimes I will get into the habit of eating the same thing before a game, but I wouldn’t call it a ritual or anything like that. One thing I do, is I wear knee pads in the game! I do not wear them in practice though.
STL: When you go on a road trip, what are the 3 things you must have with you?
Megan: When I go on a road trip, the three things I must have with me are my Bible, deodorant, and toothpaste/toothbrush.

STL: What three words do you think your sisters would use to describe you?
Megan: Wow, this is a hard question. I have an idea of what they might say, but I decided to ask them! So here is what they said, “competitor, honest, and caring”.

Becky Hammon – See What Your Present Is Today
Becky Hammon checks in from Spain with a new blog and reminds us of how much we have to be thankful for. Some great words from Becky to kick off the start of the Thanksgiving Week and Holiday Season. Read More at BeckyHammon25.com
Que pasa?? I hope my first blog from Spain finds everyone around the world happy and grateful. Grateful for what? You know the old saying, count your blessings, count them one by one… etc etc.. And since Thanksgiving is around the corner, I’ve been thinking about how grateful I am, for my family, friends, health, job, and sometimes even to say thank you for the very air I breathe.
When we wake up each morning, we are presented with the “present”… every moment of now is a gift, and our thought process in the now determines a lot of how our day might go, or even how our week, our year, our whole life might go. It’s true that life is bound to bring us all some pain at some point, we’re human. It’s the very nature of the world we live in. Life isn’t easy all the time, in fact sometimes it’s flat out hard and unfair… BUT even then, we have the gift of the “present”.
